At Pilates by Ness, we are firm believers that you should be able to perform any movement you’d like and do any activity that you desire, at ANY AGE. Never let anyone tell you that you’re “too old” to do something you’d like to do. Contrary to what the media might portray, you can begin your Pilates practice at any age. Pilates for Seniors is one of our favorite and most popular Pilates Methods out there.
Living in Denver, we have the opportunity to participate in so many different activities. For example, every year our owner meets multiple people in their 60’s and older on the top of Colorado’s many mountain tops. This is not to say that getting older doesn’t have its challenges and you shouldn’t be more cautious but many of these challenges can be maintained or improved upon with a consistent Pilates practice.
There are so many negative connotations with getting older and at Pilates by Ness we are dedicated to breaking these, one senior at a time! When considering this Pilates Method please consult your doctor prior to scheduling, especially if you have any pre-existing conditions or haven’t been active in a while.
One of the most common ailments that the aging population is faced with is Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone” which causes the bones to become very brittle and weak from loss of bone minerality. This could lead to very serious fractures from something as simple as coughing or bending over. Pilates for Seniors comes highly recommended for those suffering from osteoporosis but quite a bit of attention and modification is necessary. Although there is no cure for Osteoporosis we can do our best to maintain it and show you the safest and most functional ways to safely move! We highly recommend joining Pilates by Ness for a Private Session to ensure your safety. When you and your instructor become more comfortable with each other and there is a deeper understanding of your movements and modifications, a Semi-Private session can be great fun with your favorite friend!
Another common issue with our aging population is dreaded arthritis which is related to joint pain. Although there is no cure for arthritis either, Pilates for Seniors is a great way to strengthen your body and slow the pace at which it increases. Modifications are still necessary and a slower progression may be part of your practice but Pilates is guaranteed to help with arthritic pain. With aging and with arthritis pain often comes a lack of range of motion. Flexibility can also differ on a day-to-day basis and healing is not always linear, never force a movement just because you were able to do it in a previous session. This is where communication with your Pilates Practitioner plays an important role. If you are having an “off” day, your instructor can help modify and create your Pilates for Seniors session to fit how you’re feeling for each session.
There is one important aspect that increases with age and that’s the power of listening to your body! Oftentimes as younger adults, we tend to ignore pain and “push through” the signals our body is giving us which can lead to injury. Pilates for Seniors works as a great atmosphere to slow down movements and become more in tune with what your body is telling you. If any of these examples ring true to you or you’re simply getting older and looking for Pilates as injury prevention, Pilates for Seniors is right for you. As with all of the Pilates Methods mentioned, you should feel safe in that Pilates by Ness has the experience and knowledge it takes to help you work through and improve upon these ailments.
